Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood
Disorders
at Connecticut Children's
•
Current clinical space in Hematology/Oncology was designed/opened in FY1996 and there were 5,500 outpatient visits that year. In FY2009, we had 12,347 outpatient visits in the same space.
•
Current clinical care spaces are split between the 2nd and 8th floors of the medical center – new facility will unite them and double size of space to 8,000 square feet.
•
Hematology/Oncology is one of the leading centers in the country for cancer drug development in the Phase 2 and Phase 3 of testing. Right now we have 162 active clinical trials – 136 therapeutic and 26 non-therapeutic. In all of New England only Dana Farber has the same amount of trials open/active. Clinical trials support team will be located in the new site.
•
In the current space, blood samples are sent to Hartford Hospital, and it takes a minimum of 2 hours to get counts back, and often 3-4 hours. Our new facility will have an on-site designated blood lab and on-site technician to provide analysis of blood counts within minutes, not hours.
•
Doubling the size of the infusion space and adding more private exam/day hospital rooms will allow children with weakened immune systems to receive care away from other children and visitors to the clinic, reducing the possibility that immuno-compromised patients could be exposed to potentially life-threatening germs.
•
Our new facility will be large enough to accommodate families, private consultation spaces for families and physicians to meet together in a comfortable setting to talk through diagnosis and treatment, and have areas for respite and play for patients and their families.
•
Overall childhood cancer has an 80 percent cure rate because of innovative therapies developed over the last 25 years. No child or family should have to leave Connecticut to receive world-class care in a facility that is patient-focused and family-centered.
